The Poisoned Pawn - A Remake of Tex Murphy: Overseer - by Chaotic Fusion.

About The Game

Poisoned Pawn?

Poisoned Pawn is a modern remake of 1998's Tex Murphy: Overseer and the next step in the Tex Murphy series legacy. Once again, both fans and newcomers alike will have the opportunity to experience the origin story of Tex Murphy, PI. Overseer was the last (and perhaps most underrated) Tex Murphy adventure created under the Access Software banner and was itself a remake of 1989's Mean Streets. Since this is the third time the story will be told, we feel it is important to make the gaming experience unique from its predecessors. Poisoned Pawn will be more than just a fresh coat of paint on an old game.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Tex Murphy is your typical 1940s gumshoe. That is, except for the fact that he lives in Post-World War III New San Francisco in the mid-21st century. He's a man born 100 years too late, living in a world polluted with radiation from the fallout of the war. Though the war brought an end to racial tension, people disfigured by the radiation (mutants) are now shunned by those who aren't (norms). Since Tex's third adventure, Under a Killing Moon, the series has mixed full motion video (FMV) with full 3D exploration. The player hunts for clues, solves puzzles and questions characters all in a film noir, dystopian, sci-fi setting. Perhaps the best comparison is to the classic 1982 film, Blade Runner.

Released in 1998, Tex Murphy: Overseer served as both a sequel and prequel to Tex's previous adventures. The story is told over the course of an evening as Tex recounts how he met his first wife to his long-time love interest, Chelsee Bando. It is the story of Tex's first case, while he was still young and idealistic. Through the course of the game, we learn how circumstances lead Tex to a hard-boiled life. Overseer provides intense emotional gravity, features excellent writing and outstanding performances from Michael York, Clint Howard and Henry Darrow under the direction of Adrian Carr.

As with all of Tex's previous adventures, Overseer was technologically groundbreaking for its day. Not only was it one of the early titles to adopt what was then the latest CPU technology (Intel's MMX Processor), but was also one of the first games to be released on the DVD format. Despite these innovations, Overseer has not aged well due to compatibility issues with contemporary hardware and operating systems.
